Lee Jeans was founded in 1889, but not as a clothing company, but rather a wholesale grocery distributor. Founded in Salina, Kansas H.D. Lee intended to serve the growing population of the Midwest with quality food and goods. As his business grew and the need for more and more perishable food increased, H.D. Lee created and Ice & Cold Storage company and LEE Flour Mills. H.D. Lee employed many people and to help maintain his growing business he needed to clothe and take care of his workers. He was unhappy with uniforms that he was being supplier so in 1913 Lee introduced the Union-All work jumpsuit. He quickly spread the work Union-All to all of his employees and the popularity of the work suit grew. In the next few years LEE Union-All's were the staple of the American worker and caused Lee to open up manufacturing plants all across the country. To help promote his brand he introduced Buddy Lee - a doll who wore Lee overalls and made its way into the advertisements and homes of many Americans. Throughout the 20's Lee had introduced many styles of clothing including Overalls, Union-Alls and the classic jeans that we know and love today. The cowboys who wore Lee jeans were introduced to the zipper-fly, an innovation of Lee jeans that was made in the 1920's. By the 1930's and 40's Lee became the #1 supplier of work uniforms, but Lee jeans were not an everyday item until the 1950's. It was the 1950's that saw everyone (kids and adults) were jeans on an everyday basis and the world of denim exploded. Lee expanded to every home in America as well as 51 countries worldwide. Lee jeans has been on the forefront of global expansion for denim since the beginning and even today Lee jeans finds its products in every part of the world. A leader in fashion, quality and value, Lee maintains its origins as a leader in innovation in the denim world.
