When you’re taking kids out for a day of fun – whether they’re your kids, or somebody else’s – you need to dress appropriately and come prepared. It will most likely be a messy, noisy, crazy day at best, especially if you have a lot of kids. Just what you like, right? Here’s how to keep your head above the mayhem.
Dress for the event.
If you’re going to the lake, or taking the kids to a paintball range, it makes no sense to dress up. Choose loose, comfortable clothing appropriate to the temperature and environment. If you’re going to the lake, for example, it’s smart to choose something like a tee shirt and cargo pants with plenty of pockets for fishing tackle, cola, candy or loose change. You might also go with slacks that convert to shorts. If it gets hot, you can just zip off the pant legs, and the shorts can double as trunks if you decide to go for a swim. If you know that you’re going to get dirty, wet or messy, dress in tough, durable clothes that are easy to clean. If you plan to be out in the sun, take a fishing hat, or some other hat with a broad brim, and don’t forget to take your sunglasses and extra sunblock.
If you’re planning a visit to a zoo or museum, choose a business casual ensemble, like khakis, a nice polo shirt, and loafers. You might want to take along a light jacket for an air-conditioned destination.
Don’t forget about your shoes.
If you’re going to have a good, sloppy old time, take sloppy old shoes – the kind that are comfortable and easy to wash. If you plan to swim, don’t forget your flip flops. If there’s a chance you might get wet, assume that you will. If you’re taking the kids on a walking tour through a zoo or museum, wear sturdy walking shoes or sneakers.
Take an extra set of clothes.
If you expect a messy time, this is good advice both for you, and for the kids you’ll be taking out. It’s safe to assume that there will be one or more mishaps along the way, and things will go more smoothly if you’re prepared. If you plan to go to a restaurant after a day at the lake, you’ll probably need to change into a new set of nice, dry clothes.
Take a backpack.
Make a list of the things you might possibly need, for yourself and the kids, and fill the back pack with them. These things might include any special medicines, parent’s phone numbers, emergency numbers, maps, your cell phone, a GPS unit, snacks and cola, toys or games, hand wipes, and a few empty plastic bags for wet or dirty clothes and shoes. If you’re going on an urban adventure, you can leave the backpack in the car, but be sure to bring the most essential items with you, so they’ll be handy in an emergency.
Once you’ve got everything you need, you can enjoy your day out with the kids secure in the knowledge that whatever happens, you’re covered!
