When people look for performance-based outdoor footwear, Vasque is the brand that they think of. Why? Because Vasque Footwear makes top quality, durable shoes that people can wear whenever they're hitting the trails. Whether they are running, backpacking or hiking, Vasque Footwear has the shoes needed. With all of the amazing shoes that Vasque Footwear offers, including stylish shoes for city living, people often wonder about where the company came from and how they came up with the shoes that made them an industry leader in recreational footwear. Here are some things that people should know about this company and how they started out.
The company was established in 1964. Vasque founder William D. Sweasy, while spending time in Europe, was introduced to mountaineering which, at that time, was all the rage with Europeans. People were spending lots of time hiking and exploring the mountains and the footwear they commonly wore were handmade mountain boots, which were designed with inspiration drawn from The Alps. When Sweasy returned to America he realized that the outdoor movement of exploring mountains had not yet reached the mainstream in North America. He also found that there weren't many brands that specialized in making shoes that could help people do this. In response, he saw the opportunity to bridge the gap and he created the Vasque Footwear company, which is still owned by the Sweasy family today.
The name, Vasque Footwear, was named for the town Fort Vasquez in Colorado. By leaving off the end of the name, Sweasy felt it gave his footwear company an European-sounding name that people could associate with mountaineering in Europe. The Vasque Footwear brand is a division under the Redwing Shoe Company, along with the popular Irish Setter Work Boot brand.
When the handmade mountain boots were first introduced in America, it encouraged people to explore America's mountain ranges, such as the Rockies, the Tetons, and the Cascades. The mountaineering craze of Europe grew in popularity during the 1970s, as more and more Americans started to explore the mountain ranges and to appreciate the profound beauty of Mother Nature. Vasque has continued with their tradition of excellence by providing innovative designs and technological advancements throughout the years. Today's new Sundowner GTX is an example of an original classic with a modern day upgrade. The mountain boot still uses the Pyrenees outsole from the original boot with newer features like a Gore-Tex waterproof membrane and Red Wing US tanned leather. Vasque eventually expanded their product line, in response to shifting trends, by incorporating lighter weight shoes into their footwear line. Today, you can find a versatile selection of boots and sneakers designed to be worn on any terrain. When one sees someone wearing these shoes, they can think about the history and where the shoes and brand came from. Over the last half century, Vasque men’s footwear has become a household name. Hikers across America continue to rely on this brand of performance shoes whenever they prepare to head to the mountains or hang out for a night on the town. Whether a person is racing along the Rockies or backpacking through the Tetons, Vasque Footwear is the perfect option
