INTRODUCING: The Everyday Flannel Shirt
A good flannel in your closet is a must-have. We grew up with brands like Woolrich, Five Brothers, Codet, Big Bill, and Carhartt, and we still have some of those shirts today - 30 years later. Back then it was easy to find quality shirts like those, but today they seem harder to find. So we are proud to introduce the Dave's New York Everyday Flannel Shirt.
We had a few simple goals in creating this shirt, but just because they were simple does not mean that they were easy. We wanted to build a shirt that is soft and comfortable, yet durable and long-lasting. The material had to be 100% cotton, and good quality cotton at that, to help keep its shape and reduce shrinking. It had to fit well, but not be restrictive. Lastly, it had to look good - classic and old-school like our shirts from 30 years ago, but with an updated style. So, after more than a year of design and testing, we finally produced our flannel shirt, and we are really proud of this product.
Here are some of the details:
Fabric
As we had mentioned, this shirt is 100% cotton. The cotton hand is important for comfort, breathability, warmth, and durability. The weight of the fabric is 8 ounces, which means it is heavy enough to wear as an outer layer in the cooler temps or as a mid-layer under a winter jacket or coat. The cotton was brushed (or napped), which gives it the soft, fuzzy hand, but we kept it minimal to prevent too much pilling. We also used a ring-spun cotton so that the material will hold its shape and keep its sizing consistent.
Features
Like a good flannel, we want it to be comfortable all-around so we use self-fabric collar and cuffs. We used our work-style chest pockets with flaps and button closure. We also used dyed-to-match buttons for a clean and consistent look. We wanted to keep the design clean, so there are no outward tags or embroidery. There is a Dave's tag on the inside of the front placket, but it's subtle in order to keep branding understated. The front placket itself was "turned in" so that there is a smooth finish down the front. This means that while the material is durable for everyday use, the shirt has a clean and elevated look that can be worn with jeans, twill, or canvas. A small design element we added was the platinum color thread on the button hole by the cuffs. This is a nod to the platinum bar tacks that we use on our work pants. On the inside of the flannel, we used a piping on the seams for comfort so that you do not feel the seams while wearing the shirt. All of these things are small and subtle, but we hope that means that you will put on this shirt and instantly feel the quality of a flannel that you can wear for years.
Fit
A flannel shirt, especially a heavier weight one, is not really meant to be tucked in. Anticipating it being worn as a top layer, we gave it a little more of a workwear fit; meaning it's slightly on the boxy side without being oversized. It has room to put a shirt underneath, but it's fitted enough that you can wear a jacket over it in colder weather. It also had a small drop-tail for added coverage in the back. The shoulders are cut with room to allow for an undershirt, and the back was given a little extra space so that the shirt is not restrictive As our staff has tried on the shirts, we noticed that almost everyone used their "normal" size when wearing this shirt, and the only ones who went up a size were the ones who wanted an oversized fit or to wear it as a top layer.
We wanted to create a flannel shirt that you will turn to time and time again. One that is clean and classic, but also new and modern. We looked to blend workwear style with classic flannel function, and we hope that we succeeded. We are really proud to create products that we would wear, that our customers are longing for, and ones that give us a throwback feeling to when products seem to just fit and feel right.
